Biography
AOIFA, daughter of Ard-Greimne, was from the Land of Shadows, an otherworld kingdom. She was a warrior-princess of the Tuatha DeDanann, a mythological people who once lived in Ireland and worshipped the goddess Dana. Her sister, Scathach, had instructed both her and the Ulster hero Cuchulainn in the arts of war. When the sisters went to war, Scathach was afraid to take Cuchulainn into battle for fear that Aoifa would kill him. Undeterred by Aoifa's reputation as a fighter, Cuchulainn challenged her to single combat. Before the fight, Cuchulainn asked Scathach what Aoifa loved best and Scathach told him that above all else she treasured her chariot. At first the combat went as expected, in Aoifa's favor, but Cuchulainn distracted her at a critical moment by calling out that her chariot's horse was in trouble. Aoifa became Cuchulainn's lover and bore him a son named Conlai. Cuchulainn decided to leave Aoifa, telling her to send his son to him when Conlai was of age. Word later reached Aoifa that Cuchulainn had married a woman named Emer. For revenge, she trained Conlai as a warrior with the expectation that he would someday kill his father. Conlai and Cuchulainn did meet in battle, but Conlai was unable to give his name or lineage. He was slain by Cuchulainn, who was unaware of Conlai's identity.
