I read that post and it seems the issue with the gear score addon is because of all the messaging between addons that creates lag. Apparently the author of the gear score addon has created a lite version that does not cause problems.

Kidding aside, as far as I know there is only one gear score addon that is used in game. So this is currently the standard the majority have chosen.
Just so you know, we use the gear score addon formula as a baseline. We then subtract amounts from the gear score for missing/improper gems and enchants as well as items that have stats or spells that do not benefit your class/spec. So I would say we have improved upon the standard and maybe, just maybe ours is better?

First off, let me say nice work with the site and the sig generation. It's pretty cool.
Now for what's bugging me ...
It would be far easier to simply follow the in game Gear Score addon rather than try to modify it by subtracting points for inappropriate enchants/gems/poor gear choice.
The Gear Score addon does not take into account enchants/gems/poor gear choice, so why do you feel the need to change the standard? To quote you - "Why drink Coke when Pepsi is clearly better".
You can say that you've improved upon Gear Score, but the fact of the matter is that people want to see their in game Gear Score rather than a totally different Gear Score modified by a penalty system that you've come up with based on what you believe is a poor enchant/gem/gear choice. If our in game Gear Score says 6168, then why should our sig say 6135. They should match.
The big thing you guys need to realise about enchants/gems/gear choice is that a lot of this is based on the content you're clearing. Sure some of it is pretty clear cut (i.e. a rogue wearing spellpower gear etc), but some of it is so wrong it's simply not funny.
My DK's Gear Score is off by like 300 or so - quite a discrepancy - and if you put my character into Rawr etc, you'll see that my gear is correct, enchanted, and gemmed. This is most likely because you haven't been able to differentiate between a tank and a dps for the DK. Additionally enchants such as Mongoose for tanking (for all classes except DK obviously) is still considered one of the best available, and the PVP resil/stam shoulder enchant is more attractive for PVE tanks than the Dodge+Defense SoH enchant as soon as you pass T9 content.
Short version - The Gear Score addon doesn't take into account the type of gear, enchants, or gems. So why make your version of Gear Score take these into account and change the formula?
All people want to see for GS is exactly what is in game

Hi xannon,
You have some great points...and we have debated these same questions internally for a while. I think you are right about the gear score needing to be the same, at least until someone comes up with a better standard.
About the enchants, we are currently working on a better way to score enchants. Right now everything is done programatically and its difficult to tell what some enchants are doing so we take some educational guesses and unfortunately as you say "so wrong its not funny" . Suffice it to say we will be updating the proper scoring according to what the community at large believes to be the best.
We will be updating in the coming days and will address these issues.
Thank you for the suggestions and keep them coming if you feel anything else could use improvement.
