SP2 is required for Java 6. I spent over an hour on the phone with MS tech support so they could help me manually remove SP2 from my computer as it caused a never ending reboot loop.
There are thousands, if not more, people who cannot use SP2 for Windows, therefor making it impossible to use Java 6.... hence, no new Magelo update for me or others who can't get SP2.

If your system has problems with XP SP2 then it has deeper issues that should be addressed. Have you taken it in to a decent tech shop for a thorough diagnostic check? If you replace the motherboard with an identical one does the problem go away? (They may be able to do that for you.) Have you thoroughly checked system memory with memtest86? You should find and fix the problem in the platform itself if it's going to have any longevity. Any system that won't run SP2 reliably stands a smaller chance of running Vista, in which case the replacement system will likely present less of a problem.

Onetree,
My old system would not install SP2. A thousand bucks later with completely new hardware and I still can't install SP2.
According to the MS techs that I spoke to on the phone, they are fully aware of the issues with SP2... so it's not a problem with my computer. No doubt that this is any different than the bmp issue with IE 5 and 6... they never fixed the issue. Of course, this is just one of the reasons I use Firefox (please don't get me started on IE lol).
On a sidenote: I've just discovered that Java 6 can be installed without SP2. Simply choose the custom install and be sure nothing is installed for IE. I just ran Magelo, it updated my main, and also now shows the fabled head piece that I won. YAY!

Java 6 runs perfectly fine under XP Pro SP1. I dont have SP2, and havent had any problems with JRE 6 as of yet, been using it since the last 2 MU updates iirc.
Bah, you beat me by 1 minute =p

Shelearns,
I'm glad you got yours installed. Not sure how you did it unless you did the custom install the way I did.... on the Sun site in the requirements for Java 6 it does state that SP2 is required. Of course I didn't go and read that until after the first time when I tried to install and got the error message that it couldn't be installed because it couldn't find SP2 (geeze that was a long sentence).
Onetree,
I'm not worried about Vista as that is something that will never enter my home much less be put onto my computer lol. If I weren't so lazy, I would remove Windows again and reinstall Linux (which is what I was running until I found out about EQ). There's a monthly fee for Cedega so you can run EQ on a Linux box, but I hate letting go of my cash =/

I went to the link that was provided(the new page looks different now), downloaded/installed, and removed the older JRE. And I don't have the file saved that I downloaded either =/
Oh wait, I used the link in "How to properly update your Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" thread. Worked fine for me, not sure why its giving some people problems :/

I've downloaded the latest version of Java 6. I'm running Windows XP and keep getting the unable to launch the application error when I try re-installing Magelo Update.

TobermoryT - if anyone's moaning - it's you. I'm just tired of being told - reinstall your JRE or your windows is corrupt. Been running WinXP fine for ages.. been running JRE fine.. been using magelo since back in the day - everything was running fine until TBS came out and everything went to hell... since then - I have had nothing but problems with it. And just for clarifications act like a pompous ass - get treated like one.. it wasn't XP and it wasn't JRE.. the updates for MU didn't upgrade to 3.0.22 like it should have.. removed MU - reinstalled.. problem fixed smart ass. Mommy ever tell you - have something bad to say keep it to yourself?

Ive found that I too have been having the EQ has been recently patched problem using Vista Ultimate 64 bit version. I followed the tips given in Onetrees link above, and that solved the computers I use which use XP Home. Also, in Vista, I tried using the compatibility mode setting of the Magelo desktop link, this only caused Magelo/Java not to work and crash at start up. I also believe that Java is 32 bit, least that was where I found the 'icon' for it, hidden in the control panel somewhere.
For now I am ok using my other computers to update my main account characters, but I thought I should bring the issue to your attention.

My solution is to run as administrator. Im guessing this has to do with the 64bit version but not positive on that. I know that I have to run EQ the same way.
