It said when I signed up for beta a few months ago that we would be given a premium account for our efforts.
Was I totally mistaken?

Magelo EverQuest beta was well over a year ago and during the beta all of the premium features were free.

Does that mean it wasn't lifetime free for doing the beta?

No it was not a free lifetime account. It was free premium access during beta and for a period of time after the beta was over (I think it was 6 months or so).
