Alright I just started playing a couple days ago with a hunter class. I was wondering where do I go to get the taming skill and or to get a pet? Heh I am kind of confused about it. Help anyone?

Hi Shadeddreamer,

you'll get your first pet with a class quest. Then you'll get the "Taming" ability, it will allow you to tame any tamable beast.

As far as I know, a new talent in WOTLK will allow you to tame special beasts such as chimera

Yes at level 10 you will receive a quest, depending on which race you went with the quest will vary.
As I tend to play night elves (best hunter race imo) it will have you tame an owl, nightsaber, and a spider iirc correctly (been a while...). Once you have done those you will be given the tame pet ability which will show up in your spellbook.
Make sure you go to petopia.com to check out the different pets. I find that cats are the best when soloing as a beast master spec.

As for Wrath of the Lich King. Or rather I should say the big patch update just prior to the release of WotLK there will be some changes coming to the hunter. Several of them are for the pet side of things. Yes you will be able to tame the chimeras, but the devilsaurs too. But one of the bigger pet chances will be that pets will now get a talent tree, (3 sections). There will no longer be a loyalty rating, alot of the skills that used to require tameing different animals to learn will not be required as every animal will already know a set of skills for thier type. They will just gain a higher rank when they hit a certain level.

There's more but I'm getting off the point. To bring it back to point. Level 10 is the level at which you will get your tame ability to have a pet.

I've always used the Strigid Owl that I first tamed in the Night Elf starting zone. Screech is awesome for AoE tanking and the pet's HP lets me fight up to 3 mobs at once and I can trap a fourth if I get jumped. The damage is also respectable for a pet even though I haven't invested a single point in Beast Mastery (Marksman/Survivalist all the way)!

Too bad they're nerfing my owl in the coming WoTLK expansion and giving Screech to Carrion Birds.
