Does the magelo synch only work for premium accounts? i've used it several times in the past week and it synchs my toons but does not update their magelo profiles. I used to have premium magelo but times are tough and certain things got cut from my budget, unfortunately premium magelo was one of them.

Yes, the gear and AA updates are for premium accounts only. However, even non premium members can use Sync to keep their toons level and guild status updated, and anyone running Sync in the background while playing helps update the database for both new loot items, and for NPC drop tables.
