Is this a bug or a feature? If it is a feature, is there a way to search my worn gear for augs easily?

Hi mzaleski, The inventory tool only list items in your inventory and bank. Your character profile display what you are wearing. There's no feature on the website to search for augs, but you can see a summary of them in your characters page. go to My characters > Edit > in the Equipment tab, select the character you want to look at > Click "Modifier" (on the left menu). Hope that's help!

That really does not help as I still don't see a list of the items in textual form and I have no way of, for example, searching to see which of my toons are wearing an Ionized Pinion. I'm not sure why the distinction is being made during inventory search. If I move it from a bag to a equipment slot, Magelo is still tracking the IDs in its database.

http://eq.gimasoft.com/AugmentViewer/Default.aspx is an alternative to view the augs a toon has equipped.
