How can I manually add characters to profile without using the sync tool?

Right now you cannot. That was disabled because there were some big bugs with it that were causing problems with other parts of the system. You just have to let Sync create the character, after that you can manually add and change gear. So you don't need a subscription but you do need to run sync at least once.

I was under the impression sync doesn't work with Mac. Any idea when manual (or sync being made to work with Mac) would be available?

Awsome, thanks for the info. Hopefully a fix of one or the other will happen soon`ish
