Earlier today, Phantom announced that coinciding with EverQuest's 13th anniversary and the free-to-play conversion, a new server will be opening for all players.
Quoting the original announcement:
On March 16, 2012, the date that EverQuest celebrates its 13th Anniversary and the date when Free To Play Launches, we will be opening up a new server, named VOX.
It will be a regular server (no special rulesets) and will give anyone the opportunity to start fresh on a server that has no high level players.
There are currently 24 gameplay servers in Everquest. A decision to close the "EQ-Mac" server Al'Kabor was recently reversed, meaning that EverQuest will have 25 active servers after the transition.
